1943 – Back When...

The world has changed dramatically since Breath O’ Pine first hit supermarket shelves 60-years ago. Below are some of the events making headlines across America during 1943.

WWII dominated the news, and Americans were forced to ration shoes and certain foods. Tuesdays and Fridays became meatless days and coupons were required for processed foods and cheese.

Two million American women worked in war-related industries, holding positions previously held by men sent overseas. Images of “Rosie the Riveter” entered mainstream America.

Construction of the Pentagon is completed, the Jefferson Memorial is dedicated in Washington, DC and Chicago got its first subway.

The average American made $2,041 a year; a loaf of bread cost ten cents; and a gallon of milk cost sixty-two cents.

Breath O’ Pine, one of America’s original pine cleaners, is first widely distributed in Bronx, NY supermarkets.
